Blowdown can hide tread, block a narrow ridge, force you toward unstable slopes, or create tempting side paths where other hikers have gone around.
A paper map won’t show the newest fallen trees, but it can help you determine where the trail is supposed to go. Your job is to connect the last reliable point on the ground with the next reliable feature on the map without drifting into an improvised route.
Prepare before you reach the obstruction
Keep the map accessible before the trail becomes difficult to follow. A folded map in a pack is less useful if you have to empty gear beside wet logs or in deteriorating weather. Protect it from rain, and carry a compass that you know how to use without relying on a phone signal or battery.
Before starting, identify:
- The trail’s general direction between major junctions
- Nearby streams, drainages, ridges, saddles, lakes, or distinctive summits
- Contour lines that reveal steep slopes, benches, and changes in elevation
- The next confirmed junction or landmark beyond the section where blowdown is likely
- A reasonable turnaround point if progress becomes slow or visibility worsens
Mark your intended route mentally, or use a map case with a removable pencil to note your starting point and any observations. Don’t mark directly on a valuable map unless it’s designed for that use.
Map scale matters. A line representing a trail may be several feet wide on the ground at a common hiking-map scale. Small bends, short switchbacks, and minor parallel paths may not appear at all. Use the map for the route’s structure, not for a precise drawing of every step.
Check the route information you’ll rely on: Before leaving, confirm the map’s date and look for current land-manager notices about closures, storm damage, seasonal restrictions, or rerouted trails. A paper map remains useful, but it may not reflect recent blowdown or an officially changed route.
Stop at the first point of uncertainty
When the tread vanishes, stop moving forward. Continuing while uncertain makes it harder to identify the last place where you were definitely on route. It also leaves a longer, less visible trail of wrong turns to retrace.
Stand in a safe location away from suspended branches, leaning trunks, and the downhill side of a log pile. Then establish your last known point. This could be a marked junction, a stream crossing, a sharp bend, a rock outcrop, or a clear change in slope. If you can’t identify a feature, use the last section of unmistakable tread rather than guessing from memory.
Orient the map to the terrain. You can do this with a compass, or by matching obvious map features to the landscape when conditions allow. A compass is more reliable than turning the map until it “looks right,” particularly in dense forest where views are limited.
Ask three questions:
- What direction was the trail traveling before it disappeared?
- What terrain feature should the trail follow next?
- What feature will confirm that you’re still in the intended corridor?
The third question is the most important. A trail that crosses a drainage, wraps around a slope, or climbs toward a saddle should eventually produce evidence consistent with that movement. If the ground leads somewhere else, stop and reassess rather than allowing a faint path to decide for you.
Read the terrain, not just the line on the map
A mapped trail is a planned corridor through terrain. Blowdown may obscure that corridor, but it usually doesn’t erase the landforms around it.
Look for broad clues rather than tiny fragments of tread:
- Contour behavior: A trail holding a steady elevation often follows a bench or side slope. A sudden steep descent or climb may indicate that you’ve joined a social path rather than the main trail.
- Drainages: Small gullies can pull you downhill and away from the route. A real trail may cross a drainage, follow it briefly, or stay on a bench above it; the map and surrounding contours should help you decide which pattern fits.
- Ridges and saddles: If the route is approaching a ridge or saddle, terrain should gradually support that movement. A side path that drops into thick vegetation isn't automatically a bypass.
- Trail construction: Cut steps, old tread, drainage work, retaining logs, blazes, or deliberately cleared passage can support the idea that you’re near the intended corridor. None is proof by itself.
- Human travel signs: Boot tracks, broken branches, and worn soil can indicate use, but they can also belong to animals, maintenance crews, or previous hikers making the same wrong turn.
Treat every clue as part of a pattern. One broken branch is weak evidence. A consistent bearing, matching slope, recognizable drainage, and remnants of tread are much stronger together.
Distinguish an obstacle from a route change
Blowdown commonly creates two kinds of confusion. In the first, the trail continues in the same corridor but is blocked by trees. In the second, the trail has been rerouted or is no longer maintained in the way your map indicates. Your immediate procedure is similar, but your confidence and decision threshold should differ.
A blocked section in the same corridor
If the map and terrain agree on the route, inspect the area from a safe distance. Look for evidence that the trail resumes on the other side of the obstruction or slightly along the same contour. The safest bypass is usually the shortest one that stays close to the established corridor and avoids steep side slopes, unstable logs, and dense brush.
Don't climb over a tightly packed log pile simply because the trail is hidden beneath it. Logs can roll, branches can spring, and gaps can conceal rocks, holes, or water. If you must cross a single stable trunk or step through a small opening, keep your pack secured, use three points of contact, and avoid placing weight on branches that may break.
After passing the obstacle, stop and confirm that you’re still on route. A bypass that gradually curves downhill or uphill can become a new path without an obvious moment of error.
A possible route change
If the corridor appears to have been abandoned, repeatedly blocked, or replaced by a clear alternative, don’t assume the most visible path is official. Compare the apparent route with the map, terrain, and any signs or markers. A route change may be marked on the ground, but markings can be weathered, missing, or ambiguous.
If the alternate path leads through a different drainage, crosses a major feature not shown on your map, or changes the route’s overall direction, treat it as unconfirmed. The prudent choice may be to return to the last known point and follow an established decision plan rather than continue on an unofficial-looking track.
Use a compass to control drift
A compass is most useful when you take a bearing before entering confusing terrain. From your last known point, determine the approximate direction the trail should take toward the next identifiable feature. You don’t need to walk in a perfectly straight line through every tree, but the overall movement should remain consistent.
Use short observation intervals. After moving around a cluster of blowdown, pause and check:
- Your direction of travel
- The slope angle and whether it matches the map
- Your elevation trend, if you can judge it or track it with a reliable instrument
- The location of nearby drainages or ridges
- Any sign of the trail reappearing
Avoid “correcting” your route based on a single compass reading taken beside metal gear, a vehicle, or another source of interference. Move to a clear spot and use the compass according to its instructions. A bearing can't tell you whether a slope is safe to cross; it only helps prevent directional drift.
If the forest is so dense that you can’t confidently relate the bearing to terrain, shorten the movement and increase your checks. Navigation becomes less reliable when you cover distance faster than you can confirm your position.
Don’t follow the easiest-looking bypass automatically
The most convenient route around blowdown is often downhill because gravity creates open spaces and natural travel lines. That can be a trap. A downhill bypass may lead into a drainage, steepen below the obstacle, or make the return climb more difficult.
Before choosing a side, compare both options. Look for the route that:
- Stays closest to the mapped corridor
- Avoids crossing above or below unstable debris
- Doesn’t require a steep traverse on loose soil
- Keeps the group together and visible
- Allows an easy return to the last known point
If you can’t see where the bypass reconnects, don’t commit to it merely because the first few yards look clear. A short scouting movement can be reasonable in open, stable terrain, but keep track of the point where you left the known route. In thick forest, set a conservative limit for how far you’ll explore before returning.
Manage the group and the changing conditions
Blowdown becomes more difficult when everyone searches independently. Keep hikers within communication range, and have one person handle the map while another watches the terrain and hazards. Don’t let the fastest hiker disappear around the obstacle and establish an unverified route for everyone else to follow.
Weather changes the decision. Wet bark, ice, wind, fading light, and rising water make the same obstacle more hazardous than it was earlier. Wind is especially important around partially rooted or suspended trees. If branches are moving overhead, leave the area rather than trying to solve the route beneath them.
Time is also a navigation factor. Repeated detours consume daylight and attention. If you’ve spent more time bypassing obstacles than planned, or if you’re losing the ability to confirm your position, turn around while the last known route is still clear. Returning is a navigation decision, not a failure to complete the hike.
Decide when to turn back
Turn around when you can’t identify your last known point, can’t match the terrain to the map, or would need to cross hazards that are more serious than the original route requires. You should also stop advancing if the only visible way forward depends on guessing that a faint path is the official trail.
A paper map can show that a route should exist in a particular valley or along a particular ridge. It can't make an unstable log crossing safe, confirm that an unmarked path is legal, or compensate for losing the route entirely. Use it to narrow the possibilities, then require evidence from the ground before proceeding.
Before moving on, use this field checklist:
- Stop in a safe place and identify the last confirmed trail position.
- Orient the map and establish the route’s expected direction.
- Match the map to broad terrain features, not just faint tread.
- Look for a stable, short bypass that stays near the intended corridor.
- Mark or remember where you left the known route.
- Recheck direction, slope, and landmarks after the obstacle.
- Turn back if the corridor remains uncertain or the hazard is increasing.
The decision threshold is simple: continue only when the map, compass, terrain, and trail evidence agree well enough to support the next section. If they don’t, return to certainty before the forest turns a single fallen tree into a much larger problem.
