A Field Procedure for Navigating Around Fresh Blowdown
When wind-thrown trees turn a familiar trail into a tangle of trunks and limbs, the safest route is rarely the most obvious one. I’ll show you how to confirm the trail, weigh a bypass against a retreat, and move without creating a new path.
Fresh blowdown changes a trail in more than one way. A trunk may block your footing, the canopy may hide the route ahead, and a root ball can leave unstable soil across the trail corridor. In the Pacific Northwest, wet ground, steep slopes, dense understory, and additional hanging limbs can make a short detour more consequential than it first appears.
Your objective isn't simply to get around the tree. It’s to determine whether you can remain oriented, avoid unstable hazards, and leave the official route without turning a fragile side path into an unofficial bypass. Sometimes the best decision is a careful detour. Sometimes it’s to turn around while you still know exactly where you are.
Prepare before you reach the obstruction
A blowdown is easier to manage when you’ve already built a reliable position. Before entering a forested section where wind damage is likely, check the route on a map and note recognizable features such as stream crossings, junctions, switchbacks, ridgelines, and nearby trail alternatives. Download the map for offline use, but don’t treat a phone track as your only navigation method. Carry a compass and a map that covers the area you’re hiking.
Keep your navigation device accessible rather than buried in a pack. If you need to leave the trail briefly, you want to mark your position before moving, record a waypoint at the obstruction, and be able to look back at your route without stopping in an exposed or unstable spot.
Your equipment should support controlled movement, not encourage you to force a passage. Trekking poles can help with balance on wet ground, but they don’t make a spring-loaded branch or unstable root ball safe. Gloves can protect your hands from rough bark and sharp branches. Eye protection is useful when you’re moving through low limbs, but it doesn’t remove the need to inspect the overhead canopy.
Confirm today’s route conditions: Check the responsible land manager’s current trail alerts, closures, and hazard notices before setting out. A route shown as open on an older map may have a temporary closure because of storm damage, active maintenance, wildfire effects, or another hazard.
Observe the whole obstruction
Stop several steps before the first trunk. Don’t immediately climb over it or duck underneath. Take a moment to identify what has actually blocked the route and what may still move.
Look for:
- The main trunk: Is it resting on the ground, suspended between other trees, or under visible tension?
- The root ball: Has the tree pulled soil away from the trail edge or left a steep, loose face?
- The crown: Are branches tangled with other trees, suspended above the trail, or pointing toward the apparent detour?
- Nearby trees: Freshly damaged trees may indicate a larger windfall area rather than a single isolated obstacle.
- The trail corridor: Can you see where the official tread continues beyond the obstruction, or does the vegetation hide the route?
- The ground: Is the bypass beside a drop-off, drainage, boggy patch, streambank, or unstable slope?
Fresh damage deserves particular caution. A branch that looks settled may still be loaded against another limb. A trunk can shift when weight is placed on it, and the root ball can settle or rotate if disturbed. Never cut, push, or drag a tree unless you’re specifically trained, authorized, and equipped to do so. Your role as a hiker is to assess and navigate, not clear the trail.
The most important early warning sign is uncertainty about what is above you. If you can’t see whether limbs are suspended overhead, move to a position with a clearer view before choosing a route. Avoid standing beneath the crown or between a leaning trunk and the direction it could fall.
Establish the official trail before detouring
A blocked route can make a faint animal path, old logging track, or previous hiker track look official. Use more than one clue to identify the trail’s continuation.
Look for a consistent tread: a compacted walking surface, regular width, drainage features, cut slopes, retaining structures, trail markers, or the way the route maintains its grade. In dense forest, the official trail may be narrow, but it usually has some continuity. A random opening between trees isn't evidence of a trail.
Check your map and surrounding terrain. If the route is supposed to switch back, a steep line straight uphill is probably not the intended path. If the trail follows a contour, a route that drops sharply toward a creek deserves suspicion. Compare the direction beyond the blowdown with the route you approached. A compass bearing can help confirm whether the visible continuation makes sense, but don’t expect a GPS track to match the trail exactly; tree cover, map accuracy, and old alignments can all introduce discrepancies.
Mark your position before leaving the tread. Record a waypoint if your device allows it, and note a physical feature you can recognize on the return: a split stump, distinctive boulder, stream junction, or particular arrangement of fallen trees. If you detour, mark the point where you leave and where you expect to rejoin. This turns a vague search into a short, defined movement.
Choose among three options
There are usually three reasonable responses: cross the obstruction, make a short off-trail detour, or turn around. Each has a different risk profile.
Cross the obstruction only when the structure is clear
Going over or around the actual trunk may be the least damaging option when the tree is fully grounded, the route is visible, and both sides offer stable footing. A short, careful step around one end can preserve your position better than wandering into thick vegetation.
Don't climb onto a trunk simply because it appears to save time. Wet bark is slick, and a log may roll or flex. Avoid crawling beneath a suspended trunk or a tangle of limbs. If you must step over a grounded trunk, face the obstacle, keep three points of contact when practical, and test each foothold before committing your weight. Keep your pack secured so it doesn’t snag or pull you sideways.
If the trunk is too high to cross without scrambling, or if the ground beside it slopes toward a drop, the time saved isn't worth the loss of control. Choose another option.
Make a short bypass when the route is identifiable
A detour can be appropriate when the official trail is clear on the far side, the bypass stays on durable ground, and you can remain close enough to the obstruction to preserve orientation. Move around the safer end of the tree rather than searching widely for an easy-looking route.
Keep the bypass as short as possible. Avoid fragile moss, muddy banks, stream edges, and steep vegetation-covered slopes. In the Pacific Northwest, dense understory can conceal holes, loose logs, and abrupt drainage channels. A route that looks open from the trail may become more hazardous once you enter it.
If you’re traveling with others, have the group move one person at a time through the most constrained section. Don’t separate far enough that the lead hiker disappears without a plan. At the far side, stop and confirm that you’ve rejoined the official tread before continuing.
A bypass becomes a poor choice when it requires repeated climbing, traversing a steep slope, crossing a wet drainage, or pushing through a long section of untracked vegetation. It’s also a poor choice when you can no longer see the obstruction or identify your return point.
Turn around before the problem compounds
Retreat is the correct procedure when the trail’s continuation is uncertain, the blowdown is part of a larger debris field, or the terrain beyond the obstruction becomes more hazardous than the route you came from. Turning around early preserves the information you already have: your known position, the visible trail, and the conditions you’ve already assessed.
Use a clear decision threshold. If you can’t identify the official trail within a short, controlled distance of the obstruction, stop extending the search. Don’t let the desire to complete the route turn a single blockage into a navigation problem. Likewise, turn around if weather is worsening, daylight is limited, anyone in the group is losing confidence, or the route would require you to cross unstable trees or exposed slopes.
Keep your position during the detour
Once you leave the trail, slow down. The goal isn't to find the easiest-looking opening; it’s to maintain a known relationship with the trail and obstruction.
Take a bearing toward the point where you expect the trail to resume, but use terrain and visible features as well. Check behind you periodically. Forest routes can look entirely different from the opposite direction, and a small bend around a trunk can become difficult to recognize on the way back.
If the vegetation becomes dense, stop and reassess rather than pushing ahead. Confirm your last known point on the map, look for the trail tread, and decide whether the detour is still within the limits you set. If you can’t find the continuation, return along your own track to the obstruction. Don’t continue in the hope that the trail will become obvious farther on.
Leave the area with as little impact as practical. Walk on durable surfaces, avoid widening an existing narrow opening, and don’t break branches or move logs to make the bypass more convenient. If the obstruction is significant, record its location and report it through the land manager’s preferred channel when you have service. Include the trail name or route, approximate location, and a concise description of the hazard. Don’t assume another hiker’s worn path is an authorized reroute.
Reassess when conditions change
Wind, rain, and changing light can alter the decision after you first inspect the tree. Rain can make bark and soil slick. Gusts can move suspended limbs. Darkness can hide the distinction between official tread and informal tracks. A route that was manageable in dry daylight may not be reasonable on the return.
Set a turnaround time that leaves room for the slowest person in your group to navigate back through the damaged section. If you’re alone, be even more conservative: there is no partner to confirm the route, spot a hazard, or summon help if you’re injured.
Before continuing beyond the blowdown, ask four questions:
- Can you identify the official trail on the far side?
- Is the route around the obstruction stable and free of overhead hazards?
- Can you return to the exact point where you left the trail?
- Do you have enough daylight, weather margin, and energy to reverse the decision?
If any answer is no, turn around.
Field checklist
At a fresh blowdown, stop and:
- Inspect the trunk, root ball, crown, and surrounding trees.
- Avoid suspended limbs, loaded trunks, unstable root balls, and steep loose ground.
- Confirm the official trail using tread, terrain, map, and markers—not a single faint track.
- Mark your position before leaving the trail.
- Prefer the shortest safe route on durable ground.
- Keep the group together and check your route from behind.
- Return if the trail continuation becomes uncertain or the bypass grows longer, steeper, or more exposed.
- Report major obstructions through the responsible land manager when possible.
A successful navigation decision may mean reaching the far side of the tree. It may also mean recognizing that the trail is no longer a reasonable route today and walking back while your position, daylight, and options are still under control.
