How to Use a Compass When You Know the General Direction
I’ll explain how to turn a known general direction into a usable compass bearing, follow it through changing terrain, and check your progress with map features. You’ll also learn how to handle declination, obstacles, magnetic interference, and uncertainty without losing your route.
You’re standing at a trail junction, a ridge, or a clearing with a rough idea of where you need to go. The compass confirms the broad direction, but “northwest” isn't yet a route. To travel reliably, you need to turn that general direction into a bearing, follow it in manageable stages, and repeatedly compare your position with the land around you.
A compass is most useful when you treat it as one part of a navigation system. Your direction of travel, the shape of the terrain, visible landmarks, and the map should agree. If they don’t, stop and work out why before continuing.
Start with the direction you already know
First, define the goal as specifically as you can. “The lake is generally east” is a beginning. “The lake is east, beyond a low saddle, and the trail should cross a stream before reaching it” is much more useful.
Look at your map and identify:
- Your best estimate of the current location
- The destination or next control point
- A large feature you can recognize on the ground
- Features you should cross, skirt, or avoid
- A place where you can stop and check your position again
For a beginner, the next control point should usually be close enough to verify. A bend in a stream, a distinct hill, a trail junction, a powerline corridor, or the edge of a clearing is easier to confirm than a distant destination hidden behind trees.
If you only know the general direction from a verbal instruction, use the compass to establish a broad travel line first. Then improve the route with terrain and map information. A compass can tell you where you’re pointing; it can’t tell you whether a cliff, swamp, private boundary, or dense thicket lies in that direction.
Take a bearing from the map or the landscape
A bearing is a direction expressed in degrees around a full circle: north is 0 or 360 degrees, east is 90, south is 180, and west is 270. Directions between them fill the gaps. Northwest, for example, is approximately 315 degrees.
There are two useful ways to take a bearing.
From a map
Place the compass on the map with the direction-of-travel arrow pointing from your estimated location toward your next objective. Keep the long edge aligned with the intended line of travel. Rotate the compass housing until the housing’s north-south lines run parallel to the map’s north-south grid lines, with the north end pointing toward map north.
Read the bearing at the index mark. That is the direction from your current point toward the objective, subject to the map’s reference system and the compass’s declination setting.
On a paper map, check whether the grid is aligned with true north, magnetic north, or grid north. Many topographic maps include a declination diagram. If the compass allows declination adjustment, set it according to the map and the area you’re navigating in. If it doesn’t, apply the correction consistently rather than guessing each time.
For a rough beginner exercise, you can use the compass housing to estimate a cardinal direction without calculating an exact bearing. However, the farther you travel, the more an imprecise direction can move you away from the intended line.
From the landscape
If you can see the destination or a reliable landmark, point the direction-of-travel arrow toward it while holding the compass level. Rotate the housing until the magnetic needle sits inside the orienting arrow. Read the bearing at the index mark.
Don't point the compass at a vague area of sky or at a broad ridge unless you’ve selected a specific feature on that ridge. Choose a tree, rock outcrop, notch, saddle, or other identifiable point. You can then walk toward that point, select another one, and maintain the same general line.
Hold and read the compass correctly
Keep the compass flat and level at about waist or chest height. The magnetic needle needs to move freely. Tilted or swinging readings can look convincing while being several degrees off.
Stand away from objects that can affect the needle, including:
- Vehicles and metal railings
- Belt buckles, trekking poles, and large knives
- Mobile phones, speakers, and electronic devices
- Magnetic closures, watches, and some camera equipment
- Rock that contains enough magnetic material to disturb the needle
Take the reading, then move a few steps and take it again if the result seems unusual. A bearing that changes noticeably after you move away from your pack or a metal object may have been contaminated by interference.
To follow the bearing, rotate your body until the magnetic needle sits in the compass’s orienting arrow. The direction-of-travel arrow should point where you need to go. Keep the compass aligned as you walk; don’t rotate the housing to chase the needle. The housing is set once, and your body turns until the needle and orienting arrow match.
Follow the line in short stages
A forest rarely gives you a clear view of the final destination. Instead, use the bearing to create a series of short legs.
Look along the direction-of-travel arrow and select a visible object on that line: a tree, boulder, bend in the terrain, or break in vegetation. Walk to it without repeatedly changing the bearing. When you reach it, repeat the process.
This technique, sometimes called aiming off a landmark in stages, reduces the tendency to drift. It also gives you frequent chances to compare your position with the map.
When the terrain blocks a straight route, don’t simply turn randomly around an obstacle. Decide how you’ll return to the original line. For example, if a fallen tree blocks your path, walk around it and resume the same bearing. If a ravine forces a longer detour, note the change in direction and distance, then use a visible feature or map check to reestablish your route.
For a larger obstacle, you can use an offset route:
- Record your original bearing.
- Choose a deliberate detour around the obstacle.
- Keep track of the detour’s approximate distance and direction.
- Identify where you expect to intersect the original line again.
- Resume the original bearing from that point.
This doesn’t need surveying-level precision for a short beginner route, but it does need to be intentional. “I’ll go around and figure it out later” is how small errors become large ones.
Check your next landmark: Before leaving each stopping point, identify what should appear next and what would indicate that you’ve gone too far. If the expected feature doesn’t appear within a reasonable distance, pause rather than continuing on assumption.
Verify with terrain, not just the needle
Use the map and landscape as a running set of checks. Ask yourself:
- Am I climbing or descending as the map suggests?
- Is the slope on the correct side of my route?
- Did I cross the stream, trail, or drainage feature I expected?
- Does the ridge, valley, or clearing appear at the anticipated angle?
- Have I traveled far enough that a mapped feature should be visible or crossed?
A single feature can be misleading. A shallow drainage may look like a trail, and several similar ridges may appear in a wooded landscape. Look for combinations: a stream followed by a saddle, a trail crossing followed by a change in slope, or a clearing at the edge of a ridge.
Terrain association is especially important when you know only the general direction. The compass keeps you from wandering broadly, while the terrain tells you whether the route makes sense.
Handle declination and general-direction errors
A compass needle points toward magnetic north, while most maps reference true north or grid north. The difference is called magnetic declination, and it varies by location and changes over time. For short trips, a small error may not matter. Over a long distance, in open terrain, or when approaching a narrow target, it can matter a great deal.
Use the declination information printed on your current map or obtain the applicable value from a reliable, current geographic or mapping source. Don’t carry a declination value from a different region or an old map without checking it.
If you’re practicing in a familiar area, compare your compass bearing with a known trail or landmark. This isn't a replacement for setting declination, but it can reveal an obvious setup mistake.
Your general direction also has limits. If you know only that the destination is “somewhere east,” don’t pretend that a precise 90-degree bearing has been confirmed. Mark the uncertainty in your plan. Choose a route that uses catching features—such as a large road, river, or ridge—where you’ll know when you’ve gone far enough in that direction.
Recover when the route stops making sense
Stop immediately when several clues disagree. Don’t keep walking in hopes that the next feature will explain everything.
Use this recovery sequence:
- Stay in place if it’s safe and mark the last point you’re confident about.
- Check the compass level and away from magnetic objects.
- Recheck the bearing and declination setting.
- Compare the map with the terrain around you.
- Estimate your distance and direction since the last confirmed point.
- Backtrack to that point if you can do so safely.
If you’re with other people, keep the group together during the check. In poor visibility, thick vegetation, or complex terrain, a short backtrack is usually safer than an improvised shortcut.
Confirm conditions before committing: If weather, visibility, daylight, or terrain has changed since you took the bearing, reassess the route and your turnaround point. A correct bearing doesn’t make an unsafe route safe.
A field-ready compass routine
Before moving, use this short sequence:
- Identify your current location as accurately as possible.
- Choose a nearby, verifiable control point.
- Take and record the bearing.
- Set or account for declination.
- Check for metal and electronic interference.
- Select a visible intermediate landmark.
- Walk in short stages while monitoring terrain.
- Stop at expected features and confirm them.
- If the clues disagree, stop, check, and backtrack if needed.
The decision threshold is simple: continue when your compass direction, estimated distance, and terrain evidence agree. Pause when one is uncertain. Stop and recover when two or more disagree. A compass works best not as a device that removes judgment, but as a steady reference that helps you make better decisions in changing ground.
