How to Dry Hiking Shoes Without Destroying Them

Fast drying is useful, but high heat can quietly damage the materials that keep your feet comfortable and protected. I’ll walk you through the first steps for removing mud, improving airflow, controlling odor, and drying hiking shoes safely across common materials.

Wet hiking shoes are more than an inconvenience. Mud can hold moisture against seams, soaked insoles can stay clammy long after the outside feels dry, and aggressive heat can shrink leather, weaken adhesives, or distort foam. The safest approach is usually slower than the most tempting one: remove what holds water, open every pathway for airflow, and use gentle warmth only when the shoe’s materials allow it.

Start by deciding how wet and dirty the shoes are

Before you reach for a heater or towel, identify what needs to come out of the shoe.

  • Surface-wet shoes may only need their insoles removed and a few hours of airflow.
  • Fully soaked shoes need to be opened up and dried from the inside as well as the outside.
  • Muddy shoes should be cleaned before drying, because packed grit can keep seams, eyelets, and tread channels damp.
  • Contaminated shoes—for example, with salt, manure, or muddy water from an unknown source—need more thorough cleaning according to the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Check the upper, tongue, heel collar, and sole edge. Pay particular attention to folded areas where the tongue meets the upper and to the space beneath the insole. Those areas can remain wet even when the shoe looks merely damp.

If the shoes are wet from a cold-weather outing, don’t leave them sealed in a pack or vehicle for hours. Trapped moisture and poor airflow encourage odor and can make drying take much longer.

Remove mud before it dries hard

Take out the laces and insoles first. This exposes more of the shoe and prevents the laces from holding the tongue tightly against the upper. If the laces are muddy, rinse or wash them separately and let them dry fully before reinstalling them.

Brush off loose dirt with a soft brush, an old toothbrush, or a dry cloth. Clean the tread and the junction between the sole and upper, where mud can form a damp band around the shoe. A stick can remove packed mud from deep lugs, but use it carefully around the upper and avoid prying at glued edges.

For stubborn mud, use cool or lukewarm water and a soft brush. Don’t soak the shoes unnecessarily. The goal is to remove dirt that blocks airflow, not to turn a damp pair into a saturated pair. If you rinse them, tip the openings downward and allow excess water to drain before beginning the drying process.

Avoid household detergents unless the shoe maker specifically permits them. Strong cleaners can affect leather finishes, waterproof treatments, or adhesives. A product that is harmless on synthetic fabric may be unsuitable for treated leather or a membrane-lined shoe.

Open the shoe for airflow

Loosen the lacing all the way down, pull the tongue forward, and separate the heel collar as much as the shoe permits. Remove the insoles and dry them independently. They often contain thick foam that holds a surprising amount of water.

Place the shoes in a dry, ventilated room with the openings facing toward moving air. A fan on a low or moderate setting can improve evaporation without creating the intense heat that damages many shoes. Leave space between the shoes and rotate them periodically so air reaches both sides.

Set the insoles on their edges rather than flat against a damp surface. If they curl, place them somewhere they can dry without being bent sharply. Insoles that remain wet after the shoes are dry can return moisture and odor to the interior.

A towel can remove surface water, but rubbing aggressively may push dirt deeper into fabric or scrape a delicate finish. Press the towel against the upper and lining, then let airflow do the remaining work.

Check the material before adding warmth: Look for the care label or manufacturer’s instructions before using a heated dryer, boot dryer, or other warm-air device. If the guidance is unclear, choose room-temperature airflow rather than risking leather, foam, membranes, or adhesive bonds.

Use absorbent material without packing the shoe tight

Plain, unprinted paper can help draw moisture from the inside, especially during the first part of drying. Crumple it loosely and place it inside the toe box and midfoot, leaving enough room for air to circulate. Replace it when it becomes damp.

Don’t compress the paper into a dense plug. A tightly packed shoe has less internal airflow and can dry unevenly. Keep the paper away from areas where ink could transfer, particularly on light-colored linings.

A clean, dry cloth can serve the same purpose, but remove it regularly so you can assess the shoe and prevent it from becoming another wet layer. Absorbent inserts are a supplement to airflow, not a substitute for opening the shoe.

If the shoes are heavily soaked, expect to change the paper or cloth more than once. Pressing the outside with a towel after each change can remove additional moisture without twisting or wringing the shoe.

Control heat instead of chasing speed

High heat is the main way people damage wet hiking shoes. Radiators, wood stoves, hair dryers on hot settings, vehicle dashboards, and clothes dryers can dry the surface quickly while stressing the materials underneath.

Excessive heat may:

  • Soften or weaken adhesives that hold the sole and upper together
  • Shrink or stiffen leather
  • Distort foam and molded components
  • Warp heel counters or toe caps
  • Damage waterproof membranes or their seam treatments
  • Create uneven drying that leaves internal areas wet

If you use a boot dryer or warm-air system, follow its instructions and choose the lowest suitable setting. Keep the shoes far enough from a heat source that they feel gently warm rather than hot. Check them often during the first drying cycle. If the upper becomes hot to the touch, develops a sharp chemical smell, or changes shape, stop the process and move the shoes to ambient airflow.

Direct sunlight can help in some situations, but it isn’t a universal solution. Long exposure can fade materials, heat dark uppers quickly, and dry leather unevenly. Bright indirect light with good ventilation is a safer default.

Treat different materials with different caution

Synthetic mesh and fabric

Synthetic uppers generally tolerate routine air drying well. Remove grit from the weave, open the shoe fully, and use a fan if available. Don’t assume that a synthetic upper means every part of the shoe is heat-resistant; the sole, foam, overlays, and adhesives may be more vulnerable.

Waterproof membrane shoes

Membrane-lined footwear can take longer to dry because water may be held between layers. Remove the insole and maximize airflow through the opening. Avoid poking tools into the shoe or using aggressive heat to force moisture through the membrane. Once dry, inspect the lining and seams for damage before your next wet outing.

Full-grain or treated leather

Leather benefits from gradual drying. Keep it away from direct high heat, which can pull out moisture too quickly and leave it stiff or cracked. Once the shoe is clean and completely dry, use only a conditioner or treatment approved for that type of leather. Heavy applications can soften the structure or interfere with breathability and waterproofing.

Suede and nubuck

Let mud dry enough to brush away without smearing it deeper into the nap, unless the manufacturer directs a different cleaning method. After drying, restore the nap with a suitable brush. Avoid oily conditioners intended for smooth leather.

Adhesive-heavy or lightweight footwear

Trail runners and lightweight hiking shoes often dry faster, but their thin materials and bonded components can be especially sensitive to heat. Treat them gently and don’t use a hot dryer simply because they seem less substantial.

Deal with odor after the moisture is gone

Odor control starts with complete drying. Sprays and powders applied to a damp shoe can mask the problem while leaving the conditions that produce it. Wash or replace removable insoles if their care instructions allow it, and clean socks separately rather than storing them inside the shoe.

After the shoes are dry, use a product designed for footwear if needed. Follow its label and test it on a less visible area when the material may discolor. Baking soda is sometimes used to absorb odor, but loose powder can collect in seams and membranes; remove it thoroughly and avoid treating it as a replacement for cleaning and ventilation.

Store dry shoes in a ventilated place, not in a sealed plastic bag. Keep the laces loose and the tongue open so the interior can breathe between outings.

Know when drying isn’t enough

Inspect the shoes once they feel dry inside and out. Look for lifting sole edges, separated overlays, bubbling, cracked leather, damaged seam tape, flattened cushioning, or a heel counter that no longer holds its shape. A persistent sour or moldy smell can indicate moisture trapped beneath an insole or between layers.

Don’t rely on a pair for a demanding hike if structural damage affects traction, fit, waterproofing, or foot stability. Drying can remove moisture; it can’t restore a failed bond or repair a compromised sole. Small separations may be repairable with a product suited to footwear, but follow the manufacturer’s guidance and allow any repair to cure fully before use.

Field-ready drying checklist

When you get home with wet shoes:

  1. Remove laces and insoles.
  2. Brush off loose mud and clean packed dirt from the tread and sole edges.
  3. Rinse only as much as needed, using the shoe maker’s care guidance.
  4. Press out surface water with a towel—don’t wring or twist the shoes.
  5. Open the tongue and heel collar and place the shoes in moving air.
  6. Use loose, unprinted paper or a dry cloth inside, replacing it when damp.
  7. Prefer gentle ambient airflow; avoid hot radiators, dryers, and intense direct heat.
  8. Treat leather, suede, membranes, and synthetic materials according to their specific care requirements.
  9. Control odor only after the shoes are fully dry.
  10. Inspect the sole, seams, lining, and shape before trusting the shoes on the next hike.

If you can’t keep the shoe comfortably warm rather than hot, or if you’re unsure how its materials respond to heat, choose more time and more airflow. A slower drying cycle is usually the safer trade for preserving fit, traction, and the bonds that keep hiking shoes together.
