How to Choose a Backpack Size for Day Hikes and Overnight Trips

A practical guide to choosing backpack capacity, torso fit, frame support, and load stability for day hikes and overnight trips—without buying more pack than you need.

When you’re standing in a gear aisle—or comparing pack specifications online—the number of liters can look like the main decision. It isn’t. A backpack that holds enough but fits poorly can rub your shoulders, pull you backward, and turn a manageable trail into a long exercise in adjustment. A pack that fits well but is too small can force gear onto the outside, where it catches on branches or shifts with every step.

Choose your pack by working through four questions:

  1. How much gear do you need to carry?
  2. Does the pack fit your torso and hips?
  3. Can its frame support your expected load?
  4. Will the contents stay stable as you move?

Capacity comes first, but it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor.

Start with the trip, not the pack

Backpack capacity is usually measured in liters. The exact volume you need depends on your equipment, the weather, your food and water needs, and how much comfort or redundancy you prefer.

As a starting point, these ranges work for many hikers:

  • 10–20 liters: Short walks, organized day hikes, or outings where you carry little beyond water, snacks, a phone, and a light layer.
  • 20–30 liters: Typical day hikes with extra clothing, lunch, first-aid supplies, navigation tools, and weather protection.
  • 30–40 liters: Long or gear-intensive day hikes, winter day trips, or overnight trips with compact equipment and favorable conditions.
  • 40–55 liters: Most one- to three-night trips, depending on your shelter, sleeping system, cooking gear, and clothing.
  • 55–70 liters: Longer trips, colder conditions, bulky equipment, or situations where you need to carry more food, fuel, or group gear.

These are planning ranges, not rules. A lightweight hiker with a compact shelter and sleeping bag may use a 40-liter pack for an overnight trip. Someone carrying a bulky sleeping bag, a traditional tent, extra clothing, and shared equipment may need considerably more.

The best way to estimate your capacity is to gather the gear you actually use. Put it together as if you were leaving for the trip, including food, water, warm layers, and safety equipment. Measure the volume if possible, or try packing it into packs at a store. This reveals more than choosing a size based on the number of nights alone.

Day-hike packs: enough room without excess

For most day hikes, a 20- to 30-liter pack is a practical middle ground. It gives you space for water, food, a rain shell, an insulating layer, basic first aid, navigation equipment, and small personal items without encouraging you to fill every corner.

A smaller pack can work well when conditions are predictable and your route is short. It may be appropriate for a warm-weather walk near trail access, especially if you don’t need extra clothing or substantial emergency equipment. The trade-off is that you’ll have less room when the forecast changes or you decide to extend the outing.

A larger day pack can be useful for cold weather, remote trails, or hikes where you carry a camera, extra layers, a larger water supply, or equipment for another person. The risk isn't the capacity itself; it’s the tendency to load the unused space with unnecessary items. More gear means more weight, and more weight can affect your pace and judgment.

For a beginner, a well-fitting pack around the middle of the day-hike range is often more versatile than buying the smallest possible model.

Overnight packs: volume depends on your system

Overnight trips require more than just one extra day of food. You may need a shelter, sleeping bag or quilt, sleeping pad, cooking equipment, fuel, spare clothing, and additional water capacity. The volume of each item matters as much as its weight.

A compact setup may fit comfortably in a 40- to 50-liter pack. A larger or less compressible setup may need 55 liters or more. Cold-weather trips usually require additional space because insulated clothing and sleeping systems take up more room. Group trips can also change the calculation if you carry shared shelter, cooking equipment, or water-treatment supplies.

Don’t choose a large overnight pack simply because it offers flexibility. A pack with too much room can make it easy to carry items “just in case,” and a partially filled pack may be difficult to compress into a stable shape. If you’re between sizes, consider whether the extra capacity will be used for a known purpose—such as winter layers or group gear—or merely for convenience.

A little unused space is helpful. It gives you room for food as supplies decrease, an extra layer, or gear that doesn’t compress well. Excess capacity becomes a problem when the pack’s structure and load-control features are designed for more weight than you’re carrying.

Fit your torso, not your height

Backpack sizing is based primarily on torso length, not overall height. Two people of the same height can have different torso lengths, and a pack that fits one may sit poorly on the other.

Torso length is measured from the prominent bone at the base of your neck to the top of your hip bones. A gear shop can help you measure it, or you can have another person identify the landmarks and take the measurement. Pack manufacturers usually provide a torso-length range for each size, and many packs offer adjustable suspension.

When trying on a pack, load it with weight similar to what you expect to carry. An empty pack can feel comfortable while hiding problems that appear on the trail.

Check the following:

  • The hip belt should sit over the top of your hip bones, not around your waist.
  • The shoulder straps should follow your shoulders without leaving large gaps or digging into your neck.
  • The load-lifter straps should angle upward from your shoulders toward the upper part of the pack.
  • The sternum strap should keep the shoulder straps positioned comfortably without restricting your breathing.
  • The back panel should feel connected to you without creating painful pressure points.

Adjust the pack in this order: loosen the straps, position and tighten the hip belt, tighten the shoulder straps, adjust the load lifters, then fasten the sternum strap. Walk, bend, and rotate your torso. The pack should move with you rather than swing behind you.

Decide how much frame support you need

Frame support affects comfort, weight, and how the pack handles a load.

A frameless or lightly structured pack can be comfortable for a small, carefully organized load. It’s often simple and lightweight, but it provides less support when you carry bulky or heavy equipment. The contents also need to be packed thoughtfully because the load itself helps create structure.

An internal-frame pack is the most versatile choice for many day hikes and overnight trips. Its frame transfers some weight toward your hips and helps keep the pack close to your body. Different frames vary in stiffness and support, so try the pack with a realistic load rather than judging it by appearance.

A more substantial frame can improve comfort when you carry heavier or less compact equipment. The trade-off is additional weight, bulk, and sometimes less freedom of movement. You may not need a heavily structured pack for a light overnight load, but it can be worthwhile if you regularly carry shared gear, extra water, or cold-weather equipment.

Your pack should match the load you actually carry—not the maximum capacity printed on its label.

Pack for stability, not just capacity

A correctly sized pack can still be uncomfortable if it’s packed poorly. Keep dense items close to your back and centered between your shoulder blades. This reduces the feeling of being pulled backward and helps the pack follow your movements.

Use the lower part of the pack for soft, lightweight items such as a sleeping bag or spare clothing. Place heavier items near the middle, close to your back. Keep items you’ll need during the day—rain gear, snacks, navigation tools, and first-aid supplies—in outer pockets or accessible areas.

Avoid placing hard objects where they press directly against your back. Don’t leave large empty spaces that allow equipment to shift. If the pack has compression straps, use them to draw the load inward after the main compartment is packed.

External attachment points can be useful, but they’re not a substitute for adequate capacity. Strapping bulky equipment outside may create snag hazards, expose it to weather, or make the pack sway. Keep external loads compact and secure, and avoid hanging heavy items far from your centerline.

Check the packed load before you commit: Put the gear, food, and water you expect to carry into the pack, then walk around for several minutes. If the pack pulls backward, shifts side to side, or creates pressure that adjustments can’t fix, change the packing or try a different fit before taking it onto a longer trail.

Common mistakes that make the right size feel wrong

Choosing by liters alone. Capacity tells you how much the pack can hold, not how it will carry. Fit and suspension matter at least as much as volume.

Buying for an imagined trip. A pack chosen for rare, extreme conditions may be unnecessarily heavy for your usual hikes. Buy around your regular use, then consider whether occasional trips justify renting or borrowing a larger model.

Testing it empty. Always add weight. A pack’s pressure points and balance become clearer when it carries realistic equipment.

Overfilling every pocket. Extra capacity often becomes extra weight. Lay out everything before packing and question items that duplicate one another or have no clear use.

Ignoring water weight. Water is dense, and carrying more than you need can change how a pack feels quickly. Plan your supply around the route, conditions, and available reliable sources rather than treating every pocket as storage.

Using the wrong torso setting. An adjustable pack still needs to be set correctly. If the hip belt slips or the shoulder straps carry most of the weight, revisit the torso length and adjustment sequence.

A practical choice for your next trip

For a typical warm-weather day hike, start by looking at a comfortable 20- to 30-liter pack with a supportive hip belt, useful compression, and enough accessible storage for weather and safety equipment. For a one- or two-night trip, compare 40- to 55-liter packs after gathering your complete overnight gear. Move larger only when your equipment, conditions, or shared responsibilities require it.

Before buying, use this field checklist:

  • Capacity: Does the pack hold your actual gear with a little room left?
  • Fit: Does the torso length match you, and does the hip belt stay in place?
  • Support: Is the frame appropriate for your expected load?
  • Stability: Does the pack remain close and balanced when you walk and bend?
  • Access: Can you reach essentials without unpacking everything?
  • Weight: Is the pack itself reasonable for the load you’ll carry?
  • Flexibility: Will it work for your common trips without inviting unnecessary gear?

The right backpack is the one that carries your planned equipment securely and comfortably. Capacity gets you started, but fit, packing discipline, and load stability determine whether the pack works once the trail leaves the parking area.
